Lifestyle - Temecula CA

Temecula offers a natural backdrop of hillsides, canyons and mountains. The name Temecula comes from the Luise?ord Temecunga - roughly, "place of the sun". It was the Spanish who transcribed the word as "Temecula". According to the city website, "Temecula is the only city in California to still retain its original Indian name". Temecula is also well known for its hot air balloon rides and tours, floating over wineries and desert terrain.

Since its early beginning, the Temecula Valley has always attracted residents with its combination of mild climate and beautiful rolling hills. The hillsides were the home of the Temecula Indians, the first residents of the area. Ancestors of the Temecula Indians were in this area as early as 900 A.D. One of the most often told stories of Temecula?s early days is of the Massacre in a nearby canyon that took place in January, 1847. The canyon is just below the present site of the Vail Lake Dam and was the scene of the bloodiest battle of the Mexican War.

What can you do in Temecula? If you feel like being active or creative, you have many opportunities! The community offers a wide variety of choices for people of all ages and abilities. Spend the day in one of the many specialty boutiques or hiking on the Santa Rosa Plateau Wildlife Preserve. Visit one of the award-winning wineries or enjoy the Farmer's Market.

Golf
  • Cross Creek Golf Club
This classical 18-hole par 71 course measures in at 6,833 yards from the tips, and was designed by Arthur Hills. Inspired by the styles of Donald Ross, Alister MacKenzie, George Thomas and C.B. Macdonald, Cross Creek was laid out on 180 rolling acres and boasts four sets of tees to challenge golfers of all skill levels. The course features many large Oaks and Sycamores, and golfers must negotiate a series of creeks which intersect the course.

  • Rancho del Cielo Golf Course
This is a teaching course for students. Because of the shortened length of the course, players use Cayman balls. The course is played as an 18 hole course, but it actually has only ten greens, which are played from different angles. One lake comes into play on three holes. This course is the National Headquarters for the American Lite Golf Association.
  • Temeku Hills Golf Course
This course is best known for its large fairways and undulating greens. The signature hole is #10, a 365-yard, par 4, requiring an approach shot to an extremely undulating, peninsula green.

Wine Country Info
Less than 60 miles north of San Diego and 90 miles southeast of Los Angeles lies Temecula Valley Wine Country, the heart of California's South Coast wine region. Rolling hills covered with vineyards, expansive views reaching to 11,000 foot high mountains, air swept by ocean breezes, and world-class wines make Temecula Valley Wine County a beautiful and fun area to visit.
